Meatless mushroom swiss burgers

Meatless mushroom swiss burger

A lot of times I decide what to make based on what I have in the fridge and the pantry.  This week I found myself with too many mushrooms, so in scratching my head about what to do with them, I opted for burgers.  These turned out way better than expected, and I’m so happy to be able to share the recipe!

I used nearly the same seasonings as I would when doing my own hamburger seasoning for ground beef. The flavour is imitative of an actual burger, yet it retains its own punch. The meaty texture of the mushrooms is perfect for producing something burger-esque.  I loved everything about this one. Sometimes you want a burger, but you don’t want a burger, you know what I mean? This is perfect for those moments.

The key to this recipe is to get all of the ingredients as small as possible, they will combine easier for a very realistic burger texture. You'll never miss the meat!

  • Prep Time: 15m
  • Cook Time: 10m
  • Total Time: 25m
  • Serves: 4

Ingredients

  • 2 eggs, lightly beaten
  • 2 cups finely chopped fresh mushrooms
  • 1/2 cup dry bread crumbs
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika
  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 4 slices swiss cheese
  • 4 whole wheat hamburger buns, split

Instructions

  1. Use a food processor to finely chop the mushrooms.
  2. Combine all of the ingredients (except for the olive oil, swiss cheese & buns) in a bowl until the mixture is cohesive (note: it will not stick together like ground meat)
  3. Use a hamburger press to make patties from the mixture.
  4. Cook in olive oil in a frying pan for 3-5 minutes on each side; melt swiss cheese on top and serve with buns.
